The Daily Dow
Monday, November 18, 1996
by Robert Sheard (MF DowMan)

Ever since the election, Blue Chip stocks have risen on the market's expectations that the economy will maintain a reasonable growth rate and interest rates and inflation will stay under control. So, it's no real surprise that the Dow went on a record-breaking rampage.

Where will it go from here? In the short term, only a Wiseman would make such a prediction. Fools are looking a decade down the road. Does anyone here think the Dow won't be higher in a decade? (Now come on ... let's not always see the same hands.) I for one am on record for calling the Dow at 17,000 in the year 2006. (Someone remind me when we get there and we'll see how worthless ... uh ... prophetic my prediction was.)

In Foolish Four news today, DuPont announced that a $70 million joint venture polyester film plant has begun operation in the southern China province of Guandong. The plant, jointly owned by DuPont and its Chinese partner, No. 3 Foshan Plastics Factory Co. Ltd., has a capacity of 10,000 tons of polyester film per year. The venture will export to the United States, Brazil, Argentina and Japan.

My thanks ... really, I mean it ... to all the Clemson and Atlantic Coast Conference fans out there for sending me e-mail, allowing me to relive Kentucky's basketball loss last Friday night. There's nothing quite like ripping bandages off of a festering wound. Oh well, the weekend wasn't a total write-off. Penn State's win over Michigan in Ann Arbor Saturday is a pretty effective salve.

Last, but certainly not least today is a new feature for you to check out. If you're reading this on our AOL site, you'll have noticed recently the new look to the nightly Foolish Four Report. Make sure you check out the list-box with the folders for each company in the model portfolio. From that section, you'll find direct links to current price quotes for each stock, performance graphs from the beginning of the year, First Call's earnings estimates, Morningstar's stock reports, EDGAR's SEC filings area on the Web, and a link to the website for each of the companies in our portfolio. Happy browsing!
