The Daily Dow
Friday, November 15, 1996
by Robert Sheard (MF DowMan)

LEXINGTON, Kentucky (November 15) -- Today is a holy day here in the Bluegrass. Not Christian, not Jewish, not Muslim, but spiritual nonetheless. That's right -- today is the start of the University of Kentucky basketball season! The only more religious day in Central Kentucky is Final Four Monday (when the Wildcats are playing, of course).

So a day like today is no time to be worrying about news on the Foolish Four (which is real convenient since there isn't any). Instead we should take time to reflect on the whole point in being Dow investors in the first place. I refer, of course, to the benefits of being able to have a life outside of financial statements, mutual fund prospecti, high-priced tout sheets, and your brother in law's tip about that hot IPO.

Sure the approach embarrasses the Wise with its market-crushing returns (and Fools love to make the Wise squirm). Sure it'll provide you with a savings vehicle for decades that should allow you to retire in style. Sure you can pull out your brokerage statements at cocktail parties and humiliate your spouse with your vulgar displays of wealth. But we all know the real benefit; investing this way gives us time to be spiritual.

So this evening, turn on the sacred vessel of spiritual transmission (the tube) and focus in on the one true channel to enlightenment (ESPN) and watch the services. (Kentucky plays Clemson after the warm-up is over between two teams I've never heard of, Indiana and Connecticut?) And when your spouse starts to complain, just claim that you're working very hard on your investments for next year. And have those brokerage statements handy in case a neighbor drops by with a hot tip.

Oh yeah! The Dow went up today -- again. That's ten sessions in a row and eight new records. Have a Foolish weekend.
