The Daily Dow LEXINGTON, KY. (October 24): Blue-Chip stocks continued to slide today, flirting with the 6,000 level on the DJIA again after rising more than 100 points above it in recent sessions. Unfortunately, today was a clean sweep for the Foolish Four stocks - five for five in the loss column. But nothing crossed the news wires, so we'll just chalk it up to the market blahs in general. Since there's no significant news today, let me share an analogy with one of my favorite interests, golf. Out on the Web, Golf.com runs a regular feature called Mr. Par, which simply tracks a mythical golfer on the PGA Tour who shoots par for every round. Each tournament, they credit Mr. Par with his "average" score to see if, first, he makes the cut after Friday's round, and second, how much money he would make if he gets to play his par golf on the weekend. Amazingly, Mr. Par would have finished this year with just over $365,000 in prize money, putting him 56th on the overall money list. (If 56th doesn't sound that great, consider that making it into the top 125 is the goal of many pros because those 125 players are granted full playing privileges for the following year. I know, I know. What's this have to do with investing? Well, the point is, we don't all have to be Tiger Woods and win everything in sight to be very successful. Being consistent and better-than-average is enough to make one a very good living on the PGA Tour, as well as earn a very good return in the stock market. It's just too bad there's no Dow Approach for my golf swing. If you'd like to see past Dow Reports, Historical Numbers, Current Rankings, or order a copy of MF Templar's 35-year Dow Spreadsheet, head to our Fool's School area and click the Dow Dividend Approach button.
