The Daily Dow
Wednesday, October 16, 1996
by Robert Sheard (MF DowMan)

Today was a somewhat surprising day for me, proving to myself once again that I could never be a day-trader. Let's look at the set-up before the market opened this morning. Last week, the wholesale inflation number was lower than expected, boosting the market and giving all the Bulls a warm fuzzy for a few days. Then the last few days have given us a series of good earnings reports from market bellwethers like Intel, Chrysler and General Motors, not to mention some big-name merger activity.

Wake up to the alarm today. Before the opening bell, we hear that consumer inflation numbers came in tame as well, right in line with expectations and PC powerhouse Compaq beat the street with its quarterly earnings announcement. In fact, Compaq made the statement that it can't even meet current PC demand. Sounds great, right? Should be another strong day for the Bulls, yes?

Well, just shows what I know. Technology stocks got hammered all day, the Nasdaq even dropping as much as 12 or 13 points around lunch-time (the equivalent of 60-65 Dow points). By the end of the day the Dow (which was lower much less severely most of the day) actually came back to post a modest gain, but not so for the Nasdaq, which shed more than 7 points.

And there you have it, reason number 27 why I'm no day-trader. Even when I think I've interpreted everything correctly, I can be dead wrong. Make that boring Dow Approach all the more attractive in my eyes. Historical returns of better than 20% a year without as much as a second thought about stocks all year. (One thought a year seems plenty, frankly.)

No news for the Foolish Four stocks today, and a mixed set of results. Two up and two down, your basic non-event day.

For those of you tuning in to CNBC last night, sorry about the crossed signals. The network taped Tom and David's appearance last night at 7:30 to be shown tonight. So, you can still catch the Gardners' take on the "Dogs of the Dow" tonight at 7:00 (eastern) on CNBC's Money Club. And after it's over, join me for a one-hour chat on the Dow Approach and Investing For Growth at 9:00 (eastern).
