The Daily Dow
Friday, October 11, 1996
by Robert Sheard (MF DowMan)

LEXINGTON, KY. (October 11): After four straight days of small losses, stocks bounced back with some gusto today after fairly tame inflation numbers came out this morning. The Producer Price Index (a measure of inflation at the wholesale level) was 0.2% for the month (0.3% for the core rate). The benign inflation news relieved some anxiety in the bond market and the long bond and blue chip stocks jumped ahead on the assumption that modest growth and controlled inflation are just what businesses need.

The bond market's closed on Monday for Columbus Day (the stock market's open, though), so Tuesday the whole worrying process can begin again ahead of Wednesday's retail inflation numbers (Consumer Price Index). Gee, isn't this fun to look forward to? No? Well then, don't bother! Let me drag out our mantra here for the Dow Approach. THINK LONG TERM!! The beauty of the Dow approaches is that you don't even have to think about things like the CPI and PPI and the Fed, and interest rates, and CNBC (sorry, guys), or even the Fools -- Hey now! But it's true. For a disciplined, long-term investor, the day-to-day stuff should be nothing more than a spectator sport. Buy 'em. Forget 'em for a year. And smile at everyone else twenty years down the road.

No news for the Foolish Four holdings today, but they all joined the blue chip party, driving the portfolio above the 25% return mark for 1996. DUPONT, 3M and IMATION partied especially enthusiastically, posting nice gains. DuPont is easily the portfolio's best performer this year and Imation, the offspring of 3M, is doing its best to get back to the break-even point. Keep in mind the offer Imation has made to shareholders. If you want to sell the few shares you received in the spin-off but don't want to take a bath on the commission, Imation will buy them back directly for a charge of 90 cents per share until early November. If you only have a few shares, it makes sense to sell them back now at this reduced fee rather than hold them until the usual portfolio update and pay a full brokerage commission. Call the company for details.

Enjoy the weekend, Fools!
