***NOTE: FOOLISH FOUR STOCKS ARE ITALICISED

The Daily Dow
Wednesday, October 2, 1996
by Vince Hanks (MF Elwood)

NORTHVILLE, MI, October 2, 1996 -- After a few straight ho-hum days, our heroes the Foolish Four, sped ahead 1.38% today, greatly outpacing the DJIA at 0.49% and the S&P 500 at 0.72%.

It was a true team effort for the FF with all five of the holdings ending in the black at day's end. Lets take a look at the scorecard: CHV +1 3/8, DD +7/8, EK +1/2, MMM +3/4, and IMN +1/8. Go team! Yesterday we spoke of inching our way forward to market doubling returns, a couple more days like this and we may *yard* our way there. :) No individual news that this Fool could find to explain the surge of all our companies.

With 3 months to go in this cycle, lets see how our guys are doing . . . SEE ABOVE...Chart 1

Two things stand out to me about the numbers above. The first being that 1996 is a very average year for the FF, thus far. We sit at 22.35% which very closely resembles the twenty-five year annual return rate of 22.23%. Not bad for 15 minutes' worth of effort a year.

The second item that is readily evident is that all our stocks are winners to date except the latest addition Imation (IMN). Imation is the fifth Foolish Four stock in very much the same manner that D'Artagnan is the fourth of the Three Musketeers. I tend to think of IMN as the less-than-charming brother-in-law that suddenly joins your family upon taking a spouse.

You'll recall that Imation joined our portfolio back in July when it was spun-off from 3M. Now, although this newest holding was never invited to join our party, we have no plans to dump off these shares despite their dismal performance. The Dow dividend approach being a very mechanical investment vehicle, IMN stays until the end of the term, as do all the stocks in the portfolio. No tinkering. No thought. No concern. Good or bad, we stick it out 'til the end of our *lease.*

In yesterday's report I kicked off the day's news with a quote. This prompted a few fine readers to jot me a note stating their appreciation of the words of the noble Mahatma Gandhi as a lead-in to the focus of the Dow approach. I'm kind of a quote guy and I make it a point to read one or two daily when I get a chance, so, I'll leave you with another that caught my eye, this one, with a slightly different slant.

''Somewhere on this globe, every ten seconds, there is a woman giving birth to a child. She must be found and stopped.''
