The Daily Dow NORTHVILLE, MI, October 1, 1996 -- There is more to life than increasing its speed. As I step in to guest-write today's portfolio recap, I'm reminded of the simple beauty of the Dow dividend approach. A seed, if you will, planted today and watered not daily, not monthly, nor even quarterly, but once yearly, over the years (barring a major disaster) will grow into a healthy, sturdy sequoia. Patience and passivity are rewarded over anxiety and attentiveness. Daily or weekly investment worries are forgone in favor of quality family time or life's simple pleasures. The true value is measured in time not spent on your portfolio. One day of trading yearly --- Average annual returns of 22%. How very, very Foolish.
The Foolish Four ended this first day of October rather flatly. A gain of .25% landed us in a tie with the S&P 500, while the DJIA lead the day by posting 0.39%. While we moved ahead today, we'll call it a wash considering the virtual tie with the other indices.
DuPont (DD) lead today's charge rushing forward 1 1/2. Today, our company announced plans to invest $1.5 billion in the Asia-Pacific region over the next five years. John Krol, DuPont's president and chief executive officer, told Singapore reporters on Monday the money would be invested in projects in China, India, Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore. Krol said the Asia-Pacific region was DuPont's fastest growing market with sales growth of 20 percent annually. Total sales in the region reached US $3.5 billion last year.
Offsetting that progress was Kodak's (EK) decline of 1 on no major news. The further battle to sway the port one way or the other ended in a bitter stalemate as Chevron's (CHV) advance of 3/8 was matched blow by blow by Minnesota Mining's (MMM) retreat of the same margin. Like Switzerland, Imation (IMN) remained neutral. We'll talk more about Imation tomorrow.
Not a stimulating day in the life of the Foolish Four, but that's pretty much what we expect; Inching our way forward to market doubling returns without the concern of day-to-day movements. No hurry here.
