The Daily Dow
Tuesday, September 17, 1996
by Robert Sheard

LEXINGTON, KY. (September 17): Tuesday was a mixed day for the Blue Chips. After impressive gains to end last week and begin this one, nervousness crept back into the market. Rumors about Fed governors requesting an interest rate hike at the Federal Reserve meeting next week spooked bond traders, and kept the equities markets from adding much to its recent advance. Buoying the Blue Chips, though, was Philip Morris, which was propped up after a Florida court threw out much of the potential claims in current litigation against the tobacco industry.

As for the Foolish Four, it was also a mixed day. Chevron, DuPont, and 3M all bucked the trend and posted nice gains for the day, but Kodak slipped more than a point.

In positive news for the company, though, Kodak said it plans to increase its shipments of Advantix cameras by more than 40 percent to meet the growing demand for the new technology. Daniel Carp, the company's executive vice president and assistant chief operating officer, said that the company plans to increase the shipments of its brand of Advanced Photo System cameras to more than two million units. The company did not say how many Advantix cameras were shipped when it began selling them in April. "A year ago, we thought our first estimates might be optimistic," Carp said. "Then, we discovered we could have sold our first year's forecast in a month."

In Dow Approach news, it appears that the Lucent spin-off from AT&T will not affect the cash dividend paid by AT&T. The company reportedly will continue paying $1.32 per share each year (and Lucent is considering paying its own dividend). So the likely result of the spin-off will be that AT&T remains firmly in the top yielding Dow stocks for some time.

If you want more details, a Foolish reader from our Web site sent me the phone number you may call to get recorded spin-off information. The number is 800-756-8500.

Another good day for the Foolish Four. Enjoy it and stay Foolish!
