The Daily Dow LEXINGTON, KY. (August 2): A recent spin-off from 3M, Imation <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE:IMN)") else Response.Write("(NYSE:IMN)") end if %> began its tenure in the Foolish Four model as a big loser (although it's such a small holding it barely affects the overall return), but has bounced quite impressively recently. Today the company posted earnings that technically were 50% below what the estimates called for, but there were a number of charges involved and more importantly, the company painted a much rosier picture for the future, driving the stock up again today.
"Our overall financial goal is a $150 million improvement in Imation's economic profit between the beginning of 1996 and the end 1998 and an annual earnings-per-share growth in excess of 15 percent by the end of 1998," said Bill Monahan, chairman. "As we develop our new company, we are concentrating on three areas of change. First, we are building a culture focused on customers and financial results. Second, we are implementing a reduced cost structure, as demonstrated by these results. And third, we are building the foundation for future profitable growth." Monahan said.
As for the numbers, Imation reported a net loss in the 1996 second quarter of $37.8 million, or $0.90 per share, on revenues of $561.2 million. In the 1995 second quarter, the company's loss was $3.2 million, or $0.08 per share, on revenues of $565 million. The 1996 second-quarter loss included pre-tax restructuring charges of $43.5 million related to employee separations and special one-time charges of $22.5 million primarily related to start-up activities. Without the charges, the company's net income would have been $4.7 million or $0.11 per share.
In other Foolish Four news, the proposed merger between Chevron and NGC Corp. will be voted upon August 30 by NGC shareholders. The deal would close the following day if approved. The stock and cash deal would combine NGC with substantially all of Chevron's midstream assets and natural gas and gas liquids marketing business.
Have a Foolish weekend!
