The Daily Dow LEXINGTON, KY. (July 29): The Monday blahs hit the Foolish Four portfolio, with only 3M posting a gain. Traders appear to be scared that Friday's employment report will be a repeat of the past few months when the market sold off dramatically after better-than-expected jobs numbers were reported. This week some sellers are doing their business early, trying to beat the Friday rush.
As usual, I have no clue whether this explanation is really behind today's decline, but neither do any of the highly paid "experts" either. Fortunately, my paycheck isn't tied to the accuracy of my market calls. For all I know, there may even be a clause in my contract where the Fools cut my pay if I start making Wise predictions, so let's get out of the deep end of the pool and on to the news.
3M bucked the Dow trend today and gained a couple of tics after posting earnings ever-so-slightly ahead of Street expectations. Operating income climbed 10.1% over last year's results and earnings per share were up 11.0% to $0.91. Both are record numbers for 3M, despite some painful currency effects which lowered earnings roughly 4 cents a share for the quarter.
In other good news (although who could tell in today's action?), Eastman Kodak was named one of First Boston's featured stocks of the week. Incidentally, Enron Corp. <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE:ENE)") else Response.Write("(NYSE:ENE)") end if %> was the other.
And finally, Chevron (along with British Gas and Nova) was given the green light by the European Commission to pursue a joint venture in the natural gas field. Chevron will transfer its natural gas business along with its subsidiary, Warren Petroleum Company, to NGC Corp., which is currently controlled by British Gas and Nova. The operation will create North America's largest natural gas and natural gas liquids company.
