The Daily Dow LEXINGTON, Ky. (June 17): Did you see the final holes of the U.S. Open? What a thrilling finish, even though my heart goes out to Davis Love. I thought he was going to pull it out with his birdie putt on 18, and then to three putt! Ouch. Better him than me, though. As much as I can fantasize about being in that position, someone would have to carry me off the course if that much was riding on a single putt.
Oh yeah, the stock market. Well, as you might have guessed by the fact that I'm writing about the U.S. Open instead of the Dow, today was a do-nothing kind of day on the market. Without any economic news of note to throw traders into a frenzy, and no news for any of the Foolish Four stocks, nothing happened to affect the portfolio. Chevron and DuPont went up a little, Kodak went down a little, and 3M went nowhere. A ho-hum quarter-of-a-percent market victory. (Rack that gain up daily, of course, and you've got a whale of a year.)
Another one of those typical Dow approach days where you just go about your business and don't sweat your investments.
For those of you contemplating a new investment in the approach, my guess is that the top ten stocks will remain stable for a little while. Caterpillar's dividend hike last week consolidated the #10 position pretty clearly. We shouldn't see the almost daily changes to the composition of the list in the near future.
