The Daily Dow LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 20): A blowout day for the Foolish Four! With the DJIA up about 60 points (or one percent), usually we'd hope for a day that simply keeps pace with a nice move like that. But today, all four of our holdings had sweet gains, beating out the averages handily. And with Chevron's big move, the gain is magnified even further since it's the stock with a double weighting for the 1996 model.
No company-specific news on Chevron today, but with an apparent agreement between the United Nations and Iraq on the sale of oil from the heavily sanctioned nation on the table, the uncertainty over the oil industry has been lifted to a degree.
In other Fool Four news, Eastman Kodak has picked up another customer for its ImageSource 85 and ColorEdge 1560 copiers. Staples <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NASDAQ:SPLS)") else Response.Write("(NASDAQ:SPLS)") end if %> will be adding 1,000 Kodak copiers for new copy centers around the country. The contract represents $40 million over the next two years.
Late Friday, DuPont announced the release for commercial sale a new, faster-acting test for the potentially deadly E. coli bacteria. The test is designed for the food processing industries and can disclose the presence of the toxic strain of E. coli in a product sample within one day, DuPont spokeswoman Lisa Mullinax said.
And today, DuPont announced that it has agreed to sell its DuPont Medical Products' SORVALL Centrifuge business to First Chicago Equity Capital, a unit of First Chicago NBD Corp <% if gsSubBrand = "aolsnapshot" then Response.Write("(NYSE:FCN)") else Response.Write("(NYSE:FCN)") end if %>. The deal is expected to close during the second quarter, but no financial details were released. Annual sales for the unit are about $70 million.
Enjoy days like today, Fools. There will certainly be down days to suffer through as well, but there's no harm in clenching your fist and cheering when things go well, as long as you don't get anxious when days like this don't happen every week. The Dow Approach is more boring even than MF Boring's own approach. Those old fables are pretty simplistic perhaps, but there's a reason the tortoise beats the hare. Enjoy your turtle-ness!
