LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 15): What can I say? What a boring day it was for the Foolish Four stocks. (Of course, I could say that four days out of five and not be exaggerating.) But after the last several sessions of sweet gains for the 1996 vintage, today was a brief pause. Three of the four stocks lagged the ever-so-slight gain posted by the overall index.

Our one winner today was cellar-dweller 3M, which has shown signs of life recently. The stock's still in the red for us on the year, but it's only May and this one has been lagging for a while. No predictions, mind you, but if the Dow Approach is true to form, 3M could start posting a nice comeback in the months ahead. Often a Dow stock will sit on the bottom for several months, even a year or more, before it starts to recover. But on the way back up, these stocks sure make the high-yield, low-anxiety approach look mighty ingenious.

The only news on any of the four today was a Bear Stearns upgrade on DuPont from Neutral to Attractive. Didn't boost the stock any today, though. So much for analysts manipulating the market on these baggy monsters!

Short and sweet today. We lost to the index but we'll suit up again tomorrow. The good guys are still winning on the season (but never by enough, eh?).
