LEXINGTON, Ky. (Mar. 28): Despite the overall Dow ending the day almost where it began, the Foolish Four had a nice day, with three of the four holdings up---two by a dollar or more a share. Portfolio laggard for 1996, 3M, put on a little steam and took top honors for the day, clawing its way back to break even for the year.

In Foolish Four news, Eastman Kodak CEO, George Fisher, is trying to exert a little pressure to force a resolution on Kodak's nine-month-old claim against Japan and Fuji Film for effectively blocking fair access to the Japanese film market. Fisher is understandably perturbed at the fact that Japanese trade officials have stonewalled Kodak's efforts to negotiate an amicable settlement, refusing to discuss the issue. Tokyo has told Kodak it should go to Japan's Federal Trade Commission with its complaint. But that puts Kodak into a Catch-22 situation since it would essentially be asking the Japanese Commission to find its own policies unfair. Likely? Not!

In other Foolish Four news, DuPont said that profits dipped at its Belgian petrol distributor Societe Europeenne de Carburants (Seca) to 697 million francs. Flat margins and high costs associated with the closing of several petrol stations were responsible for the fall in profits.

On the day, then, nothing terribly newsworthy, but the Foolish Four picked up a little ground on the market, which of course, is the goal---unexciting, steady, market-beating growth over decades.
