The Daily Dow LEXINGTON, Ky. (Mar. 21) - Ah, the first full day of spring in the Bluegrass. So where's the sun???? And I thought I moved here to escape the snow. . . silly me. What? This is the Dow recap? Oh, I get it. . . those boring stocks no one buys because they're not sexy enough. Ok, if I have to, I'll talk about 'em. Big news for the Dow today, of course, is the announcement of a tentative agreement between the United Auto Workers and General Motors, potentially ending the 17-day strike which was threatening to chew off a good hunk of this quarter's Gross Domestic Product. Word is that the deal goes to the union tomorrow for ratification and workers could be heading back to their jobs as soon as tomorrow afternoon. GM expects it will take a full week to get everyone back online, however. As for the Foolish Four, Chevron was the only stock in the news today. Chevron and five other companies of the North West Shelf Consortium announced a discovery of crude oil and natural gas about 80 miles from the northwestern coast of Australia. While there's no way of knowing the size of the discovery until more drilling has been done, the company is optimistic that production will start as early as the first quarter of 1997. Chevron also won a partial battle in its ongoing dispute with San Francisco. The city wants Chevron to remove a pipeline which it feels poses a potential threat to the water supply in the event of a major earthquake. A judge ruled Monday, however, that Chevron could continue to operate the pipeline. The judge did order Chevron and the city to continue negotiations toward a settlement, however, and will hear arguments again on April 17. Other than that, no big stories for the Foolish Four -- an average down day in the middle of an average down market. Makes you kind of glad those quarterly dividend checks roll in. Gotta keep reminding yourself that you're really "working" your portfolio with these Dow stocks! Wouldn't want to give the Wise the wrong impression, now, would we? "Honey? What time does the tournament tip off tonight?" Oops. . . don't mind us, we're discussing "hot tips." Transmitted: 3/21/96
