Boring Portfolio Report
Wednesday, August 14, 1996

by Greg Markus (MF Boring)

PHOENIX, Ariz., August 14 -- The market recovered somewhat today from Tuesday's sell-off. The DJIA advanced 20 points on modest volume of 343 million shares, while the Nasdaq rose 7.4 points (0.66%) and the S&P 500 picked up a bit less than 2 points (0.28%).

As for the Boring Portfolio, it registered a nice 1.05% increase in net asset value, with six holdings advancing and three declining. There was no significant news on any Boring stocks today (other than a quick note on PMSI), so let's just whip through a quick recap of the day's price moves and call it a wrap.

Taking today's Borefolio losers first, Shaw Group, which jumped ahead $ 1 1/8 yesterday, jumped back by the same amount today. Green Tree shed a quarter-point, while Cisco, which issues its quarterly and FY earnings report tomorrow, slipped $ 3/8, All in all, no big deal.

As for the session's winners, Borders Group booked a $1 1/8 gain in advance of its quarterly earnings report tomorrow afternoon. Texas Industries continued yesterday's upside move by cementing a quarter-point advance on Wednesday. The Spiders crept up $ 7/32, as well.

Both Borefolio healthcare issues looked fit as a fiddle. Prime Medical Services more than made up for yesterday's quarter-point loss by busting for a $ 3/4 gain today. Prudential initiated coverage of PMSI today, with a "buy" rating. That can't hurt, right? Meanwhile, Oxford Health Plans, which managed a small gain yesterday despite overall market jitters, tacked on another dollar today, to close at a bid of $44 7/8.

That leaves our newest entry, Carlisle Companies. CSL went right to work in earning its keep for the Boring Portfolio, gaining $1 1/8 on volume of 51,200 shares -- more than triple its average daily action. With that move, we're already in the black with Carlisle.

By the way, CSL traded ex-dividend today, which means that anyone who bought the stock today rather than yesterday (when the Borefolio did) will have to wait 'til the next quarter's cycle to receive the $.245 per share dividend.

Let's see, now: 100 shares times $.245 equals a quick $24.50 that will show up in the Borefolio account soon. Cool. That covers the broker's commission for the stock purchase!
