ANN ARBOR, MI (July 25) -- Borefolio athletes triumphed in Thursday's competition, besting the S&P 500 contingent and even managing to move ahead of the strong team from Nasdaq.

The first Borefolio victory took place at the natatorium today. For much of the past year, Nasdaqi swimmers had been setting record after record. So impressive were they that some observers suspected the team of using questionable stimulants to enhance their performance. As a result, Nasdaq team members have come under heightened scrutiny in recent months, and, interestingly, their performances have slumped dramatically during that time. Today, the Nasdaqis seemed to have recovered some of their strength, but they failed to hold off the scrappy Borefolio athletes in the pool.

In the 4(letter)X100 freestyle, Cisco led off for the Borefolio team, netting a quick 3/8 lead. Cisco was a walk-on at Stanford a few years ago and has grown rapidly into a formidable competitor, leaving rivals in her wake.

Oxford was next off the blocks for the Borefolio team and added a healthy 1 3/8. Prime managed to extend the lead by another 1/8, crushing any hope for victory the opponents may have had.

Shaw powered through the anchor leg, finishing just off her personal best. So impressive was Shaw's performance that it moved her into second place overall on the Borefolio roster, a fraction ahead of Prime.

Meanwhile in the gymnastics competition, the Borefolio team of Borders, Green Tree, Spider, and Texi showed that strength can come from diversity.

Leading off on the uneven bars, Borders booked a quick 7/8 lead. Green Tree accounted for an additional 3/4 on the balance beam. Spider, the most recent addition to the team, demonstrated her exceptional blend of agility and balance in the floor exercise, tacking on 9/16.

It all came down to the vault. Texi had been rock-steady through most of the year, but in her first attempt appeared to slip and injure herself.

"I can't feel my leg," she was heard to say to her teammates.

"Shake it off," said the coach, a middle-aged taskmaster of Hungarian ancestry. "We need you."

Texi steeled herself and produced an outstanding vault, cementing the victory for the Borefolio team, as the crowd erupted into cheers.

After the awards ceremony, Borders said she'd be opening a new bookstore in Birmingham, Michigan. The store is scheduled to open in 1997 and will be the Ann Arbor native's ninth store in the state.

All in all, it was a day of impressive performances -- and not the last of them, by any means. All eight Borefolio athletes said they intended to continue competing for a good while yet.
